Our History

Miami Women’s Panhellenic Association was founded in 1917 by twenty-one women representing various National Panhellenic groups. Panhellenic fulfilled a niche in social, cultural and philanthropic activities in a very young city.

From 1917 to 1920, the women sponsored a French war orphan.  The scholarship program soon followed, and continued to evolve as the organization’s finances and the needs of the recipients changed.  In 1955, with the retirement Mary B. Merritt, the University of Miami’s Dean of Women and a Miami Panhellenic Founder, an annual grant was added to the 2 scholarships.  This grant, called the Mary B. Merritt Award, was given each year to a woman returning to the University of Miami for graduate school.   Louise P. Mills another member of the University of Miami Administration was a member of Miami Women’s Panhellenic and served as President.  As an undergraduate, Louise had been the recipient of a scholarship.  After her untimely death, the second scholarship was re-named in her memory in 1988.  In 2001, the Ruth D. Kerdyk Past Presidents Scholarship was established.  Ruth was a past President of Miami Women’s Panhellenic and was well-know throughout the community for her wonderful book reviews.

Over the years, Panhellenic has had a number of fund raising activities.  Tea dances, bridge parties, fashion show, wine tastings, theater parties, garage sale, raffles, book and bake sales have enabled the organization to continue to provide scholarships to young women attending both the University of Miami and Florida International University.  Over $150,000 has been awarded to help further the educational goals of women in our community.
